Polls: Bandits on the Run
Monday, 06 July 2009

The previous poll was:  Is it ok to run as a "bandit" during races?

First, what is a bandit?  Simply put it, a bandit is a runner who joins the race, uses the race support, but did not pay the race fee.  There is a lot of discussion about running bandit.  There is even a debate in many other forums whether it is ok or not.  Now let's see how our running community sees it.

Here is the result of the polls:

Is it ok to run as a "bandit" during races?

YES   43%
NO     57%

Number of respondents:  242

Looks like most runner don't find running bandit good.  But is the difference significant between those who approves it and those who does not?  I think it is not that significant.

Why are there bandits?

I have my share of being a bandit.  My reasons is usually because the registration was closed or I completely forgot to register.  I have the bad habit of registering at the last minute, typically onsite.  So since I am already at the race venue, why not join the run instead.  They even offer the water, so why not grab it.  What an excuse.  And I hope you don't quote me on this in your next bandit run.  And don't even think I endorse bandits.

What hurts the running community is when bandits do it on purpose because they can't afford the race fee or protests the expensive fees.  They run the course, grab water at the stations, take some freebies, and even get mad at the race marshals for not doing their job.  Ehem.

Why you should not run as a bandit

It is not a common practice here but in the US, bandits are not included in any insurance claims if anything happens to the runner in the race.  That is an important consideration when running since anything can happen to you.

Running bandit is also a form of stealing.  You steal from those who paid for the race and you steal from the race organizers who work hard to come up with an event.

What to do if I don't have money to join?

Run.  But run elsewhere.  I mean, there is a vast field where you can run for free.  You can meet up with friends afterwards.

Volunteer.  Be a pacer or be part of the race support.  It is not a common practice here in the country but in some races, you can volunteer and get a discount in their next race.  I hope this happens here too.

Be self-supportive.  So your friends are running but you were not able to register.  Run with them but bring your own support like a hydration belt. Don't cross the finish line and be part of the traffic.  Give way to the official runners.

Bandit dito, Bandit doon

Leave a comment on your thoughts about running bandit.  This might stuck a little discussion.  Please respect the other's opinion.

my personal comment..halus every wik naa run..mpuno na ako closet sa jersey and race numbers ngtambak napud..i remember way bak my first years here in cebu..mahal na ang 100 na reg fee..it included a singlet and some freebees already! karun negosyo njud tingali..

i may continue to run as a bandit kung d abot ang reg fee and bati ang design sa singlet..

or i may legally reg as a runner..f kaya sa bulsa and a nice or new running route..

**yes..practically ill vote its ok to run as a bandit!!!

I do not condone the actions of Bandits!!! However there's no way of preventing bandits from running events.
Bandits even have their own start time in the Boston Marathon.

As long as they do not take any legal actions towards the organizers if something bad happens to them, then I am fine with Bandits!!!

An incident happen in the US when a bandit was injured during the race.  So the bandit sued the race organizers for not keeping them safe!!! Baga kaayo ug nawong  Shocked

can't believe bandits are still present at the world's most prestigious running event. in cycling, it's like the Tour de France with bandits! i think these are the people who failed to qualify for this race. Boston Marathon should only be for the top 10% marathoners in the world.
