What do you think?

Let's save the oval! Repair the track and let the running continue!

Additional P70M sought for oval repair
By Roderick Osis

BAGUIO City Mayor Reinaldo Baustista Jr. has sought the help of Malacañang for an additional funding in the rehabilitation of the Baguio Athletic Bowl.

Bautista said Thursday that the additional funding would amount to P70 million and will be used for the oval repair, which will include the placing of the tartan track worth P50 million. The remaining P20 million would be used for the improvement of the oval's facility.

He said although the University Games would no longer be held in the city after its officials returned the hosting to Bacolod, Bautista said it would give the city ample time to finish the much needed repair bracing for much bigger sporting events.

"Our target is not just the Unigames but other events like the Palarong Pambansa and at the same time, the Athletic Bowl to be a training facility for our athletes not just from Baguio but also national athletes," the mayor said.

He said the P70 million is apart of the P125 million which was earlier allocated.

"Last Tuesday, we sent a letter to (Executive) Secretary Eduardo Ermita to help us (with the) P70 million for the rehabilitation of the Athletic Bowl," Bautista said.

The mayor said the P125 million is for the overall rehabilitation of the Burnham Park, which includes the Children's Park, football grounds and the athletic oval.

The proposed renovation of the sports complex includes provisions for the shotput, soccer, discus throw, hammer throw and javelin field, within the Olympic-sized oval tracks.

A multi-purpose building for indoor basketball, volleyball, tennis, conventions and fairs, with a 7,000 sitting capacity, is also envisioned in the plan.

The existing main and small grandstand will also be repaired and painted as proposed.

The rehabilitation was first proposed in a resolution authored by then Councilor Daniel Fariñas in 2005, requesting for funding from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo through the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC)

In his proposed resolution, Fariñas said if rehabilitated, the sports complex could accommodate regional and national sports events, making the city not only a tourism center but also a sports center.

Aside from repairing the Cebu City Sports Center track, i think it's high time for Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu City to build a track oval of their own. The CCSC track is just way too crowded. It's the busiest sports track in the country after all. It's only an indication that more and more people in Cebu are giving emphasis on having a healthy lifestyle. The 32nd Milo Marathon Cebu Regional Eliminations set a record for having the most participants in a running event with 22,000++ runners in August 2008. With the recently concluded Rotary Run last Feb 22, event organizer Raffy Uytiepo was able to say that Cebu is fast emerging as the running capital of the country.

Danao City has a track oval of their own and I think Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu City deserves one too! Cool
